Curriculum Vitae

Sotiria Bedreli MD, PhD, FEBGH Gastroenterologist – Hepatologist Advanced Endoscopist

Dr. Sotiria Bedreli was born and raised in Orestiada. She was admitted through the national examination system to the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where she studied from 2002-2008.

After completing her studies, she began her residendy at St. Josefshospital Uerdingen in 2009, continuing her training at the University Hospital Essen from 2013 to 2018 under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Guido Gerken. Her training in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, as well as in ultrasound began already in 2009.

During her five-year training at the University Hospital Essen, she gained extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of liver diseases, including the treatment of patients before and after liver transplantation, while she was the clinical and research coordinator of the University Center for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

She was fully trained in the full range of endoscopic procedures, as well as in the performance of modern diagnostic methods of examination of the digestive tract (PH-metry, manometry). She specialized in the performance of diagnostic and interventional ultrasound of the organs of Gastroenterology and received the official recognition of performing ultrasound from the German Ultrasound Society (DEGUM), as well as the official license to perform ultrasound in the field of Gastroenterology from the Greek Ministry of Health.

In 2015, she completed her doctoral thesis entitled “Evaluation of hemostasis by means of rotational thrombelastometry (ROTEM®) in patients with acute liver failure and chronic liver disease” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. med. Ali Canbay. She received the title of specialist in Gastroenterology in 2016 and from 2017 she worked as a senior physician initially at the University Hospital Essen and from 2018 to 2025 at the Marienhospital Gelsenkirchen, an academic hospital of the University of Bochum and Essen.

Throughout her many years of professional career abroad, she gained extensive endoscopic experience, as well as specialized experience in performing intestinal ultrasound (IUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). She actively participated in the education and guidance of resident physicians and students, as well as in lectures and presentations of clinical and research content. Her research work was published in international scientific journals with a high impact factor.

In the summer of 2025, after 16 years of professional recognition abroad, she returned to Greece for family reasons, where she settled in Alexandroupolis. Since then, she maintains a private practice, offering high-level endoscopy and ultrasound in a well-equipped space of international standards, with modern, state-of-the-art medical equipment.
